Today is Stephen Lawrence Day – And It Matters Now More Than Ever

On 22nd April 1993, Stephen Lawrence, an 18-year-old Black British teenager with dreams of becoming an architect, was murdered in a racist attack in London. His death and the tireless, dignified campaigning of his family (and especially his mum, Baroness Doreen Lawrence) exposed deep institutional failings and forced a national reckoning with racism in the UK.

But over 30 years later, Stephen’s story is not just history. It is a mirror.
A mirror reflecting where we are and how far we still have to go.

We still see major racial disparities in education, healthcare, criminal justice, and employment.
We still hear the stories of young Black and racially minoritised people who feel unseen, unsafe, and unsupported. We still confront systems that, despite progress, too often protect the status quo rather than the marginalised.

Stephen Lawrence Day is a vital reminder that change requires not just action but prior to that, acknowledgement of the problems. It challenges us to keep justice, equity, and compassion at the heart of our work. To question not only the overt acts of racism, but the silent, systemic ones that continue to shape outcomes for too many people.

At Strawberry Words we are committed to creating spaces where everyone is treated with dignity and humanity, especially in the workplace. We believe that antiracism is not a one-time conversation; it is a lifelong practice, and we advocate for cultural humility to be practised in the workplace and society. We honour Stephen’s legacy by raising awareness of the issues and through education so that all racially marginalised people can be seen and treated as full human beings.

Talking about racism can seem difficult and uncomfortable. This CPD accredited course provides a foundational education on racism to help to increase racial literacy which includes building confidence to speak about and deal with issues concerning race. It provides a language through which meaningful conversation can take place (particularly in the workplace).
